WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PROTECT MY CHILDREN
This is one topic that really inspired the setting up of this blog. I have been so worried about what children go through these days even when it is not their fault, and my research has shown that most parents are to be blamed for the woes their children go through because they don't provide protection for their children.
Children these days need a lot of protection from so many things. The world today is evil and our innocent children should not be victims.
Gone are the days when a child is said to be a child of everyone or a child of the community or society. What used to be abominable is now almost legal. It is very hard these days to trust other people with your children, not even some family members any more.>
One major role for parents is providing and protecting their children, but some parents do not do much about protecting their children. Don't forget there are your responsibility.
According to former president of America, Barrack Obama, he said while he was growing up as a young man, he was always thinking about himself and how he would make it. But when he got married and had children, he focus turned to his family. I can say he is a faithful father, because even as president, he didn't miss dinner with his children, he still attended their games and concerts. That was serious commitment. In his words, "we have to take care of our children because they are the next generation even though it is very difficult ".
As I observe the world of parents and children, I have discovered that children are more vulnerable to attacks, molestation, dehumanization and so on. Worst still is the fact that those who are supposed to protect and guide the children are mostly the ones victimising them.
Today, there are those who are ready to molest a 2 year old girl child sexually, there are those who want to use them for money rituals, there are those who want to get them involved in one bad gang or the other, there are people who are ready to beat up your child for a no just cause. Just like the Bible says, the heart of a man is evil and desperately wicked.
There is also the media ready to churn out all kinds of dirty and uncensored information to your children, there is also the bad peer pressure. How will children contend with all these without parents protection? are the parents living up to expectation? have parents realized what level of commitment they have to make to save the future of their children?
There are now three different worlds we live and exist in.
1. Spiritual world
2. Physical world
3. Internet world.
I added the third because the internet has evolved into a world of it's own that is very powerful and influential take it or live. Many people now live their lives based on the instance of the internet.
You have people with false representation, pseudo names, fake identity and are controlled by events on the internet. The internet is a place where children need lots of protection because there is little or no control.
First of all, let's look at the physical world and what to protect your children from.
1. CHILD MOLESTATION: according to a report by UNICEF, millions of Nigerian children suffer some forms of physical, emotional or sexual violence. The report also disclosed that approximately six out ten children experience some form of violence, and 50 percent of all children in Nigeria experience physical violence. Also according to UNICEF, violence occur in many settings, including the home, schools, communities and over the internet. Similarly, a wide range of perpetrators commit violence against children such as family members, intimate partners, teachers, neighbours, strangers and other children.
The increasing rate of child molestation today, gives credence to the fact that much is not done either by parents or law enforcement agencies to curb the menace. So it's about time parents take the bull by the horn.
i CHILD RAPE: one major form of child molestation today is child rape. I really don't want to bore you with statistics about this because there are irrationally mind blowing. Child rape is now like a recurring decimal in our society today. This used to be abominable, despicable and unheard of, but reality with us is that children are now victims of this. Whether male or female, no one is spared. And very painful is the fact that some children are sexually molested by siblings, family members, relatives and close allies.
There are cases of children raped at the age of 2, most of them below the age of 10. At these ages, the children don't know much and cannot put up any form of resistance. The onus then lies on the parents to protect their children. Most painful according to some stories is the fact that the parents exhibited negligence, and the children had to suffer for it.
Do not take chances, do not feel your child is safe with just anybody. As a matter of fact, fathers have raped their daughters, and most cases, these children never get over the emotional trauma this comes with.
You must know who your child is visiting, playing with, or always wanting to be with. This could be tasking especially when your child is a teenager, but you have to show commitment towards the next generation.
I will share a story I read from a web page "Today's Christian women". It was a conversation between a 7 year old Nate and her Aunt. 'After a long day of playing, outside my aunt and Uncle's home, I ran into the house where my aunt was cooking dinner. The news was on in the other room, and I sat and watched it for a few minutes. Confused by something the reporter said, I walked into the kitchen and asked Aunt Misty, "what's rape? " I was only 7 at the time, but I clearly remember Aunt Misty gasping and racing around to find the remote. 'What's rape? I repeated once aunt Misty turned off the television. My older Cousin John tapped my shoulder, rape is when people go like this to you" he told me and grinder his teeth. I thought to myself, but I figured my cousin new best.
Now according to the story above, Nate's aunt reacted by turning off the television, and an answer came from an elder cousin John. It's important to note that children within that age bracket ask lots of questions, and if you don't provide answers for them, they will get answers somewhere else, whether it is correct or wrong. In answering them, you must know what they can handle at their age. Say the truth, but keep it moderate.
ii VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN: how about other people inflicting pains on your children unduly, Parents have to watch this. Do not give the bad guys reasons to hurt your children. Take it or leave it, the world out there is not as safe as it used to be, and it's not God's fault.
There are kidnappers, Ritual killers, Religious extremists who are ready to radicalise any child for their mission.
An example to this is the case of a suicide bomber who bombed and killed several people in a concert arena in USA some times this year 2017. The story had it that the teenager was radicalised when he traveled to visit an aunt.
I also read read of a six year old girl child in Nigeria who was trying to come home from school on her own, and decided to take a shorter route through a bush. What was found the next day was her dead body.
Parents have to take a deeper look after their children. Keep tabs of your children. Accompany them to distant places.
MEDIA PROTECTION
The media is a whole new world so many parents are oblivious of. In our world today, there are what I term "Analogue parents and digital children". So many parents are not yet at par with the digital life, and their children are playing a fast one on them. The children of this generation are radically exploring this digital age especially the internet, and on the internet today, a whole lot of this happen.
Children learn all kinds of things from the internet, both good and bad. All kinds of people also exist on the net; fake people, evil, good, terrorists, crime experts, social workers and so on. When you give a child an internet enabled phone without proper caution, you have simply weaponized the child, because that is access to everything; the good, the bad, the ugly.
You should follow your children on social media to see what they are doing.
* Check the channels they watch; even cartoons.
*Check the sites they visit.
*Check the kind of friends they follow and caution them appropriately.
SPIRITUAL PROTECTION
This life we live is both spiritual and physical, and the spiritual controls the physical.
As parents, our first spiritual duty is to pray for our children whether they are toddlers or teenagers or even grown ups.
Speak good words over your children and do it always.
One way to protect your children spiritually is for you to make sure they are not victims of some of the things you and your fathers suffered; like recurring ailments in the family line, evil patterns, recurring bad trends and evil that has been running in the family.
You can do this by praying them out of such patterns and teaching them to prayerfully exempt themselves too.
EMOTIONAL PROTECTION
Parents can by their actions and in actions dampen the emotions of their children by;
*Taking decisions that can affect their children negatively. Some parents make crucial family decisions without putting their children in to consideration.
I will give you an example of a good parent. The immediate past president of the USA Barrack Obama comes handy. After his tenure as president, he had to buy a house in Washington DC for $5.3m just to stay back in Washington for two more years with his family to enable his daughter Sasha finish school.
He could as well decided to leave Washington after being president, but he had to stay back because of his daughter's education. It could have been easy to leave, but remember that children do have emotional attachments to their schools because they make friends a lot and have some kind of attachment to their schools.
*When you make promises to your children, please keep them. It can also affect their emotions.
In general let your decisions protect your children too. If you are thinking of breaking up, think first about your children.
Children from broken homes go through a lot of emotional trauma, so parents take note.
There is also the media ready to churn out all kinds of dirty and uncensored information to your children, there is also the bad peer pressure. How will children contend with all these without parents protection? are the parents living up to expectation? have parents realized what level of commitment they have to make to save the future of their children?
